I watched a very interesting video on Tech Crunch TV the other day where venture capitalists David Lee and Ron Conway discuss some of the key attributes of their most successful portfolio company investments. The video is definitely worth a watch if you have a spare 15 minutes or so. You can find the video here as well as my own take below.

While the businesses that I encourage readers to start on MyWifeQuitHerJob.com are not crazy startups where you’re working 16 hour days, trying to hit a home run and earn millions and billions of dollars, there are many parallels between a lifestyle business and a venture backed startup.

In other words, many of the same traits that make a venture backed startup more likely to succeed apply to small businesses as well. H

Submitted SPS 2011 on time? Got a receipt?

Posted by Luke Dadson 0 Comment May 29, 2011

If you (or your agent) submitted your Single Payment Scheme claim online this year, you should have received a receipt by email soon afterwards, confirming the Rural Payments Agency has it. You can check the RPA had it by the 16 May deadline through the RPA’s “Track Claims” function in the farmer’s “e-channel”. There is apparently one outstanding case from 2010, where no receipt was received and the RPA is not paying as a result. If you posted your application (or any additional papers for an online one) have you had an RPA acknowledgement postcard?  You should have had this within seven days, or 10 days if you delivered it to one of the RPA post-boxes at their offices. If not, contact the RPA as soon as possible on 0845 603 7777. Rememb Read Full Post…

Having lived in India all my life businesses that have sprung up because people who follow different religions and faith need certain kinds of products and services are certainly not new to me. My posts next month will shed more light on businesses born out of religion and this post is just a prelude of things to come.

Born and raised as a Muslim, Islamic business is something that I’ve been exposed to very early in life. T

Most modern businesses accept plastic. Credit and debit card payments account for sixty percent of all retail transactions. The numbers are even more lopsided online, where nine in ten transactions involve plastic. It is clear that we are headed for an increasingly cashless society. What does this mean for American businesses?

No matter their size, history or reputation, every business that accepts credit/debit card payments must apply for and obtain a merchant service account. Offered by banks and other authorized financial institutions, these providers perform a number of essential services for their merchant clients. For starters, they check to see if the card is valid. The merchant will see either an “approved” or a “declined” message on the screen of his card reader. If the

They say it takes a village to raise a child and Ill add it takes a campaign to make your marketing stick. Ill never forget a meeting with a small business owner who had just dipped her toes into the advertising world for the first time. We got together to discuss her marketing efforts for her small business and when she arrived at my office, she was just beaming.

First on my agenda was to find out exactly what she had done to market her business so we could figure out together what would be most effective going forward.

She grinned as she pulled out a section of the newspaper to show me her ad.  It looked like thousands of other small business ads Ive seen over the years business name and logo at the top, along with her company tag line, phone number and website address.

I asked her how many times the ad had run and what her response had been.

Promotional Products for Children

Posted by admin 0 Comment May 25, 2011

We are bombarded by advertisements and promotional clips or products daily. I am sure by now that there is an understanding that individuals are convinced to a certain products through multiple exposures. Most of the time, adults are the ones with buying power, therefore making all the decisions during purchase. But the younger generation should not be neglected too.

Sometimes, democratic families take children’s opinion into consideration, so children’s liking should also be shown some concern. Other times, parents would like to cater to the needs of their child. So, businesses should also need to research on certain items that would appeal the children and also appease the parents. Best option for car shoppers: Postpone buying

Posted by Luke Dadson 0 Comment May 23, 2011

Attention all car buyers: The era of cut-rate financing, generous cash-back offers and big discounts is coming to an end.

With the effects of the earthquake in Japan rippling through the industry and causing shortages, prices are rising for both new and used cars, and fewer models and options will be available come summer, especially for the hybrids and fuel-efficient vehicles that Japan produces.

That’s prompted many experts to voice something rarely said in the sales-happy auto industry: With consumers facing the toughest market in recent memory, if you can, put off purchases until things sort out, probably early next year.

“If you don’t have an immediate need, you are probably better to wait and figure out where the market is headed,” said Jesse Toprak, an analyst with auto information company TrueCar.com.

Toprak concedes his reluctance to give such advice. Read Full Post…
