Joy Erickson plans on attending Northen Arizona University in 2012 to get her bachelors in environmental education. The recession has forced many families to rip up their plans for paying for college and one expert strongly advises parents against making 401K withdrawals to pay for schooling.
State-budget cuts forced many colleges and universities to make huge tuition hikes. Job losses siphoned money for college savings accounts.

GM, UAW may beat pact deadline

General Motors Co.’s negotiations with the UAW are progressing with an intensity typically found weeks later into contract talks, said a person close to the process, and some skeptics are starting to believe an agreement could beat the Sept. 14 deadline.

Before official contract talks started in July, CEO Dan Akerson had been meeting with union leadership every four to six weeks. He was as open about his desire to tie hourly workers’ bonuses to quality and efficiency as UAW Vice President Joe Ashton was about the union’s goal of adding more jobs.

Discussions about a new contract to replace the one that expires Sept. 14 already have explored ways to accomplish both those goals, a person familiar with the talks said. In addition, negotiators are working on a way to cover for lost retiree benefits. Read Full Post…
