I wrote a post with this title more than four years ago. Today, a good day for reflection and looking back as we welcome a new year, I want to revisit the basic truth in the title of this post, and point out what that really means.

Why are plans always wrong? Because they predict the future, and were human. We humans suck at predicting the future.

Paradox: nonetheless, planning is vital. Planning means starting with the plan and then tracking, reviewing progress, watching plan vs. actual results, correcting the course without losing sight of the long-term destination.

Planning is a process, like walking or steering, that involves constant corrections.

Landry’s buying McCormick & Schmick

HOUSTON (AP) — Restaurant chain Landry’s Inc. on Tuesday completed its tender offer for all outstanding shares of common stock of McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurants Inc.

About 13.1 million shares were tendered at $8.75 per share, or for about $114.5 million. That’s 88 percent of Landry’s outstanding shares and enough to let Landry’s complete the acquisition without stockholder approval.

Landry’s, owned by billionaire Tilman Fertitta, faced some hurdles on the deal, including a lawsuit with its shareholders who said they were opposed to Fertitta’s $130.1 million bid for that company. T

A cabin crew member has launched a campaign to have Ryanairs advertising campaign banned on the grounds that is it sexist. The series of ads launched by Michael OLearys company feature members of the red hot flight staff wearing underwear.

So far the campaign leader, identified only as Ghada, has attracted over 7,000 supporters on the website Chang.org.

Ghada asks that the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ban these ads which have the tagline Red Hot Fares Crew.

As part of her Ryanair: stop selling your staff campaign she says I’m a member of cabin crew.

Exports to Panama Could be Reduced

Members of Congress weighed in Wednesday on long-delayed free-trade deals with South Korea, Colombia and Panama. Proponents claim the deals will create or save as many as 380,000 jobs, while skeptics contend the accords will lead to 214,000 lost U.S. jobs. To mollify opponents, officials coupled the free-trade deals with extra unemployment insurance and other benefits for displaced workers. USA TODAY’s Tim Mullaney breaks down the impact of each deal.

How much we trade: $38.8 billion of U.S. exports to South Korea, $48.9 billion of U.S. imports from South Korea last year, according to the Census Bureau. Biggest sources of the trade deficit include cars, wireless communications equipment and appliances.
