People who work from home at their computer, or in a desk job often spend 8 to 14 hours sitting at their desk being relatively stationary. How much time did you spend at your desk yesterday?
Sitting for so long, day in and day out, can cause you to suffer from some form of weight gain, muscle atrophy, and a higher rate of obesity, deep vein thrombosis, stroke and heart attack. In general obesity is on the rise, and the sedentary lives lived by so many of us office workers is one the causes. It is becoming imperative to get out from behind the desk and move. When was the last time you exercised? We all know that exercise offers many rewards and benefits such as:
- Promotes weight management
- Improves mood
- Induces more restful sleep
- Improves cognition
- Increases flexibility
- Promotes Stronger bones
- Prevents disease
In fact, walking burns twice the calories as sitting, so people with desk jobs need to try to find a way to get out from behind the desk and exercise. But finding time to do everything that needs to be done can be daunting. There’s work, laundry, cooking dinner, not to mention the need to spend quality time with loved ones.
Knowing you need to do something and doing it are quite different. Is there a way to do it all? Yep. Enter the treadmill desk! Treadmill desks are workstations built around a treadmill. And they are very cool.
Here’s the scoop. You use a standing desk and walk on the treadmill while you work at your treadmill desk workstation in an upright standing or walking position. Don’t worry — you don’t run on it, though you are certainly able to choose to take a break from working for a sprint, but the walk is very slow, about one mile per hour. This is the pace that enables you to use the walking desk without interrupting work productivity. You can see an example in the video below.
Here’s one of the coolest parts about this desk. Treadmill workstation users have reported an average weight loss of about 50 lbs a year. No wonder, since walking burns about twice the amount of calories as sitting. One variety of treadmill workstation is the Trekdesk Treadmill Desk which fits over a standard treadmill. This makes getting in your daily minimum steps (remember the surgeon general recommends 10,000 steps a day) a piece of cake. You can complete your exercise while you work so you can use your free time to do something else. It’s a good fit for the life of a busy business owner.
A treadmill desk is something all office workers, whether the work is performed in a cubicle, in a big, modern office, or at a home office, should have. It is needed because it will increase the body’s range of motion and make “sore butt” a thing of the past. Not to mention the treadmill desks will increase overall health of the user. Whether a virtual assistant, financial consultant or business consultant if you work long hours at a desk, this is a must have.
I have the treadmill already and will be ordering one of these treadmill desks very soon. I love the concept! How about you?
